Back in my high school days, (1978-1982) my best friend lived on 19 Diamond Street, remaining there until the late nineties. The apartments were all very nice, filled with "old timers". Her apartment had loads of period details, pocket doors, huge rooms, etc. It is so sad to see all of that area in such a state of disrepair.

Well, it's certainly not a happy street, is it? I've just driven down it on Gmaps and I'll agree with you that it leaves a lot to be desired - but I'll also bet you that it was once a decent place to live - long, long ago. There are several - what look like - old boarding houses here and #12 (with the green trim) has some cool grill-work going on above the front door! And let's not forget that beautiful Armory down the street, either. They would NEVER have built that in a slum area so that's just one more dead give-a-way that Diamond Street once saw better days. I realize that my Gmap refs are several years old, but I'm also noticing a coupla houses whose owners are TRYING to keep looking good. Lots of points for their efforts!

Maybe, someday, this sad, old street will rise again. It looks like there are plenty of empty lots there waiting to be re-imagined and re-invented. In fact, I could say that about a huge chunk of Providence. All it needs is the repatriation of a solid, middle class to whip things back into shape.
