My two brothers and I grew up in this house. My parents moved away in the early 1980s after my younger brother left for college. Waverly Street was a great place during the 60s and 70s. There were lots of good kids living on the street as well as on Althea and Linwood. We conducted serious wiffle ball and touch football games in the vacant lot next door. Our backyard hosted competitive basketball games. My father was constantly working on the house — painting, building out the third floor, installing a new heating system, planting trees etc. Years later I was told by a Providence police officer that this house in particular was one of the worst in the city in regards to drug activity and police calls of all sorts. At one point, there was apparently an unlicensed dental office operating at this location. The waiting room was said to be full of patients when the police conducted a raid. My brothers and I have each moved out of state for career and family reasons but it is, nevertheless, sad to see the current state of “our house” and of the West End in general.

This sums up a lot of Providence’s problems. Millions have left failing societies to go to America, I don’t blame Rhode Islanders for going to America. As I have said before, without some kind of economic engine, Rhode Island is in for a long haul.
There is a theory that if America had been settled from West to East, New England would be a National Park.
RI is not likely to develop new economic engines any time soon. It is known around the country as very expensive, over regulated and highly corrupt. Visit Dallas and then ask yourself why anyone would relocate a business to RI or start a business in RI. The aging Catholic immigrants (my parents included) who came to Providence for the opportunity to work in factory jobs became “Truman Democrats”. This served their interest at the time and also fit with the Catholic ethos (“The meek shall inherit the earth.”, “The first shall be last and the last shall be first.” etc) This led, however, to a degree of domination by one party (the Democrats) that is extreme compared to virtually any other state (Read “Land and Power in Hawaii” if interested in another case of the working class taking over politics on a state and local level with the unintended consequence of corruption and poverty.) Air conditioning has made industrial and post industrial business possible in the south and southwest. Low taxes, better regulatory frameworks, cheap land and better transportation infrastructure have made it more economic than in the northeast. Instead of competing head on, RI has hunkered down into a super populist state of denial (complete with a Kennedy imported from MA to represent RI in Congress). The needed reforms would be highly unpopular. My guess is that they will happen eventually but probably not for another generation.
It is surprising how much Texas is industrializing, I have sent a lot of machine tools there.
Does anyone have a guess as to how much this property would sell for under current conditions?
This house has hired a contractor and has done quite a few repairs in the last few months. I’ll post some pictures when I can.
