Here’s one that just popped up down in my neighborhood Washington Park. Windows smashed. Doors are secure but we’ll see for how long…
It was owned by a nice Haitian family for a while then sold in ’02.

This house has the “quick and dirty” vinyl siding that irks me. It has a “doll house” look with sunken in windows and doors. This is the result of a “short money” job. Done properly the old siding would have been removed and the new siding would “re-occupy the same space”. This house is “cottage style”. What small “detail” it would have had has been covered with the vinyl. Even the corner post of the front porch has been “sided”. Along with the window and door casings, the porch railing simply disappeared. There is a truck mounted machine which forms aluminum to replicate the original window and door casings. Just about every siding contractor has one.
My property is adjacent to this property. During my 5 years as a resident in this location, this house has always housed tenants who were unemployed. To the best of my knowledge three families have been evicted during that time at this location. I contacted the City of Providence’s Building Inspector about this property several times. The employees at his office would not let me speak directly to the inspector to inquire if the owner of the property had been contacted or was being held responsible for the broken windows, unkept property or danger the property posed to neighborhood children. My husband mows the median around the property and removes glass, broken bottles and trash on a regular basis. We tried to sell our property but all potential buyers were concerned about this abandoned property. What is being done about these abandoned properties?
“What is being done about these abandoned properties?
Not enough. That’s why citizens are coming together here.
A function of Forgotten Providence is to compile enough data to demonstrate in the face of those who theoretically responsible for the abandoned landscape and to keep them accountable for their actions and/or inaction. We’re currently trying to make the processes of the inspections and standards department public and transparent. Thats only a step.
We realize governments will not solve our problems. Nor will the fragmented non-profits and CDC who often compete for the same handouts and together have no overarching strategy for the city.
By writing in with your thoughts and comments you’re helping to create a tool to help the government do its job better. And there is much work to be done.
Like you, this house was submitted and photographed by a fellow neighbor.
Keep ‘em coming.
Based on the comments above, I suspect this house was given the “qucik and dirty” makeover to meet qualifications as “Section 8″ subsidized housing. Section 8 inspection only concerns itself with a “check list” of items. It doesn’t concern itself with esthetics, and I don’t think it should. With government in charge of esthetics, what we would get is “BauHaus”
